Policy Initiatives Program

The Utah Wildlife Federation (UWF) Policy Program is dedicated to advancing sound policy and legislation that ensures the long-term protection of wildlife, habitats, clean water, and equitable access to nature for all—hunters, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts alike. We use the best available science, the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation, Traditional Ecological Knowledge, and relationship-building with local communities to inform our policy stances. Through research, collaboration, and direct engagement with lawmakers, we build the foundation for lasting conservation outcomes.

Key Program Components:

Policy Research & Reports

  • We conduct and publish original research to inform decision-making on pressing issues, including endangered species protection, habitat and corridor preservation (with a focus on both public and private lands), water conservation, and access to public lands and waters.

  • Our research often integrates citizen science and is used to educate lawmakers, stakeholders, and the public.

  • Focus Areas: Legislative analysis, wildlife protection, habitat connectivity, hunting and angling regulations, water access, and outdoor equity.

Policy Action Committees

We establish and support action committees composed of hunters, anglers, landowners, and non-consumptive recreationists who collaborate with legislators to draft proposals, provide expert testimony, and support conservation-focused policy.

These committees also work closely with lobbyists and community leaders to ensure broad representation.

Advocacy Days at the Capitol

UWF coordinates annual visits to state and federal legislative offices, where grassroots advocates—ranging from sportspeople to educators—meet directly with decision-makers.

These events amplify local voices and build bipartisan support for conservation priorities.

Legislative Monitoring and Response

We track key bills throughout state and federal legislative sessions, analyze their impact, and mobilize advocates accordingly.

Our team provides data-driven insights and expert testimony to influence outcomes and keeps our supporters informed through regular legislative updates and action alerts.
